Den of the Celtic Kitsune

Knitting, restaurant reviews, social issues, and the general life and adventures of a kitsune of Celtic descent.

Name:

In Japanese folklore, kitsunes are believed to possess great intelligence, long life, and magical powers. Foremost among these is the ability to shapeshift into human form; a fox is said to learn to do this when it attains a certain age (usually a hundred years, though some tales say fifty). Kitsune usually appear in the shape of a beautiful woman, a young girl, or an old man, but almost never an elderly woman. Supernatural powers commonly attributed to the kitsune include, in addition to shapeshifting, the ability to generate fire or lightning from their tails or to breathe fire (known as kitsune-bi, literally "foxfire"), the power to manifest in dreams, the power to fly, and the ability to create illusions so elaborate as to be almost indistinguishable from reality. Some tales go further still, speaking of kitsune with the ability to bend time and space, to drive people mad, or to take such nonhuman and fantastic shapes as a tree of incredible height or a second moon in the sky. And that's just what I do every day. You should see what I do in my spare time....

Lucy Bag is off the needles!

Compared to many of my projects, this one was quick. A quick trip to the laundromat for felting and we're in business for the embellishment stage. Well, not quite. I haven't yet decided on a pattern for the embellishment. Still planning to go with some sort of embroidery or cross stitch.

Argyle Scarf Update: Finished! I finished the seaming on this project last week and opted to skip fringe because it just didn't look right. It only needs to be dry cleaned before handing it over to its new owner-my chiropractor. I brought the project to my appointment, hoping to get a little more of the seaming finished while I waited, and surprisingly, she just died over it. Apparently, the scarf is in Green Bay Packers colors, and she's a die-hard fan. Not quite what I had in mind when I blogged about the scar finding its proper owner. I really thought it would go to a guy so color me surprised.

Upcoming Projects: My next two projects are blankies for two grade school kids. These will be knit at the same time and be finished by Christmas (I hope). Blankie #1 for little girl will be a a pink & purple variegated wool blend from Sirdar done in a 5x5 basketweave on size 10 needles. It will have a garter stitch border. Blankie #2 for a little boy will be a bright (Kermit the Frog) green acrylic number done in a bobble and lace pattern that reminds me of a warty frog's back. I'm still undecided about the border for this blanket, but I'm leaning toward a 1x1 rib. And yes, the natural fiber snob is actually using a 100% acrylic yarn. Hard to believe, huh?

Future Projects: I'm still searching for the deep turquoise "Star" yarn from Classic Elite to knit the tank top I mentioned in the spring, but I'm not having any luck. Someone out there must have a stash of this discontinued color. The beach blanket from the same issue of Knit Simple will be the next project I tackle after those blankies for Christmas because it's quite a large project and I would love to use it this summer. I've also found a use for that beautifully dyed sock yarn from Lorna's Laces. I'm going to use it for a lacy summer wrap in a wave/seafoam pattern. These five projects should keep my tails in motion until at least early summer. After that, I think I might knit my first sweater....
